AZERBAIJAN: THE TRANSFER OF POWER
Abstract
The importance of the transfer of power issue is not limited to Azerbaijan: it applies to Central Asia as well. The present leaders will inevitably leave their posts, which will invariably lead to crises—this is the main weakness of the Central Asian regimes. To preserve the status quo and the
“Family,” the leaders must transfer power either to a relative or to a trusted person. This explains the heightened interest in the presidential elections in Azerbaijan, since any scenario will affect political and economic life in Azerbaijan, the Southern Cau- casus, and the Caspian region.
